A sketch possibly related to Stevens' commission to decorate the dining room of Dorchester House in 1856 (built in 1853, knocked down in 1929 and replaced with the Dorchester Hotel). The designer, who drew up his plans for the Wellington monument that same year, produced a number of similar chalk studies for the Italinate scheme he envisioned for Dorchester House. This particular drawing may have been an idea for a caryatid.
