Augustus Edwin John (1878-1961)
Provenance
Louise Salaman, and thence by descent
Louise Salaman, who owned this drawing, was the older sister of Michel and Dorothy Salaman. All three were students at the Slade where they met and befriended both the artist and the sitter of this drawing. Louise, who had money, often bought pictures from her impoverished fellow students. Ida Nettleship was the oldest of three sisters. She married Augustus John secretly when she was 24 in 1901, after which five sons put a stop to her painting. This sketch was made about 1900.
