Emma Mary Augusta Bourke, née Hatch (1852-1935), was 38 at the time of this drawing. She was the mother of the artist’s sister-in-law, Norah Bourke. At her second marriage, in 1908 to George Villiers, 5th Earl of Clarendon, she became Lady Emma Villiers, Countess of Clarendon.
