Leicester Gallery, January 1944, 'The Collection of Sir Michael Sadler', no. 36

This fine early drawing was done in Meninsky's first year at the Slade School of Art, after he had won a scholarship from the Jewish Educational Aid Society, which also helped his friends Gertler, Bomberg, Rosenberg, and Kramer. Meninsky was born Ukrainian but his family moved to Liverpool when he was a baby. In 1920 he was appointed as a tutor of life drawing at the Westminster School of Art where he was renowned as a superb figure draughtsman.
