Cole excelled in producing bucolic pictures like this one, documenting the pastoral countryside around Surrey and Sussex with a heightened atmospheric effect. Widespread concern about the despoliation of the landscape by industry and suburbia ensured the popularity of Cole's work, as Victorian audiences welcomed reassuring imagery of the home counties.
