Jungman was a naturalised Englishman, but returned to Holland frequently and painted Dutch subjects for exhibition in London. His colourful, characterful pictures were described by one newspaper as a 'cross between the detail of Holbein and a Japanese print by Outamaro', in which even his most humble subjects - from precocious 'ragamuffins' to 'knitting maidens' - are drawn with affection. This girl with her doll was number 1 in Jungman's 1899 show Picturesque Holland at Dowdeswell Galleries.
