Provenance

Mrs Gladys Lilian Grant

As a student at Birmingham School of Art, Armfield, along with fellow students Henry Payne and Joseph Southall, was enthralled by Burne-Jones, and by medieval painting.  At the suggestion of his tutor, Arthur Gaskin, he visited Italy and it was here that he became interested in fresco painting.  He began to paint in egg tempera, a medium that suited his meticulous approach.
