After studying at the Slade, Tuke left London to live on the fringes of England’s mainland - first in Lamorna, to work alongside the Newlyn school of painters, and then in Falmouth, where he set up his studio aboard a yacht. Drifting along the coast, Tuke explored Cornwall’s coves and sea caverns, painting the local surrounds (and, famously, the local boys). This study in watercolour is the sort of backdrop typical of Tuke’s bathing subjects, and was likely done on the deck of his floating studio dubbed ‘Julie of Nantes’.
