Model and actress Anne Maria Jones (known as Augusta or ‘Gussie’) was one of three Jones sisters, including Mary Emma (Sandys's partner) and Milly, who modelled for Sandys in the 1860s. Originally from Hull, where their father was a customs inspector at the dock, the family of five daughters moved to London; there, Augusta and Mary Emma pursued acting, and sat for several artists. Described by Lady Burne-Jones as ‘a noble-looking girl’, Augusta modelled for Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Whistler, and Simeon Solomon, among others. She eventually married designer and architect Frederick Vincent Hart.
