Study for Moonbeams Dipping into the Sea
Pencil
6 x 8 inches
This late drawing, done after de Morgan had fully embraced Spiritualism, is for one of the heads in her Symbolist painting of 1910- 1914, Moonbeams Dipping into the Sea, in which three numinous female figures linked by drapery and holding hands descend from the moon to the sea. The palette is rainbow. In ancient lore, the moon is associated with fertility and the cycle of life; the personification of dusk and the moon was a recurring motif in her later work.
