Study of Mary Emma Jones, the Artist's Wife, for 'Girl with Doves', c 1867
Pencil and coloured chalks.
15.75 x 21.5 inches
This drawing is similar to another (2.A137) in the collection of the artist's family that Betty Elzea, author of the catalogue raisonne of Sandys' work, to about 1867, and is of his partner, later his wife, Mary Emma Jones. The other drawing also features marks that can be identified from our drawing as the outline of a dove to the left, whilst ours has another fully drawn top right. Both were studies for a painting, untraced, cited by Elzea on p 342 of her Catalogue.
Our thanks to Betty Elzea
