PROVENANCE: Ward-Price Auctioneers, Toronto, April 1948, lot 216 The Estate of Aleen Aked, Toronto with JS Maas and Co with Chris Beetles Stanley Seeger EXHIBITED: Royal Commission for the Chicago Exhibition, 1893, no 2 The cave is Dunald Mill Hole, in Lancashire, a much engraved curiosity, painted by, amongst others, the Liverpool Pre-Raphaelite James Campbell (his The Dragon’s Cave, c 1854, Walker Art Gallery). Brewtnall had a keen interest in folk tales and ballads, which often provided the subject matter for his pictures. This picture was exhibited in America in 1893.
