PROVENANCE: With Julian Hartnoll, 1970
Robertson spent more than twenty hours on this ambitious drawing in 1910. The strange figures hiking through the landscape are the artist and his then girl-friend, Jenny Campbell. The cowled monks are a mystery, although at the time Robertson was reading The Secret Doctrine by the Theosophist Helena Blavatsky, a massive and complex revival of esoteric and occult ideas in the modern age.
