PROVENANCE: with JS Maas & Son, Ltd
Bobby and Virginia Chapman, Debden Manor, Essex
This charming 'modern life' picture of the 1850s, unsigned, has been variously attributed since the Maas Gallery first traded it, but in subject, date and handling it is very like the work of Rebecca Solomon, sister of the wayward Simeon Solomon. The girl tying on her bonnet is dressed modestly and may be going to church (the red book under her gloves could be her psalter), in which case the excited little dog is going to be disappointed, and in any case she has no lead to attach to its collar to take it for a walk. A curtain is drawn over the fireplace so it is probably summer.
