LITERATURE: Richard Redgrave CB RA, A Memoir, Compiled from his Diary, by FM Redgrave, Cassell & Co., London, 1891, p.117 in the summer of 1852, Redgrave went to Abinger in Surrey for the summer for the first time, and was there joined by his friend the marine painter James Clark Hook. They and their families enjoyed a long hot summer and he wrote in his memoirs: '...we were often all together, sketching at the little springhead of the Tillingbourne, at the top of Friday Street.... I made four pictures from this very pool.... Sweet, sunny hours we had! How can life offer anything happier?' It was the first of several such summers there.
