PROVENANCE: A wedding gift to Judy and Hugh Johnson, OBE
LITERATURE: Illustrated in Grosvenor Notes, 1886, p 52
A young girl stands between love and purity, roses and lilies in the language of flowers, in the ancient Greek heaven. The large, finished version of this picture is in the Driehaus Museum in Chicago, and was exhibited in the Grosvenor Gallery in 1886, no. 209. This small version was probably sent by the artist to Henry Blackburn, the publisher of Grosvenor Notes, a magazine that catalogued the exhibition and illustrated its better pictures. Painters who wanted to have their picture reproduced had to submit sketches for engraving in early April, in advance of the Exhibition.
