Additional Description
Atkinson is little known today except for a remarkable picture in Lord Lloyd-Webber's collection that used to belong to Evelyn Waugh, The Upset Flower Cart. The close attention to the clothes and shoes, and the distinctive treatment of the faces, is very like. The artist exhibited a painting called Gleaners Crossing a Brook at the RA in 1855, of which there is a photograph in the Witt Library. The water, the feet and the background is also very like. The artist was painting in the Pre-Raphaelite manner in the 1850s.
