Southampton City Art Gallery, 'Beyond the Brotherhood:the Pre-Raphaelite Legacy', 21 Feb - 21 June 2020
In 1904, Bell was made a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, which facilitated a hiatus from teaching art, his principal occupation. The present picture dates to this period of focused output and was exhibited in his solo show at the Fine Art Society. Flora, the artist's first wife, is believed to have been the subject for the central figure in red.
Many thanks to Geoffrey Beare for his help in cataloguing this picture.
